red tape nightmare
Sep. 17th, 2010 03:11 pm This morning, I put Gracie on the school bus and went to the DMV to renew my license, which expires on my birthday (the 28th). I wasn't sent a reminder or anything, but 11 days is plenty of time for a routine thing which I only didn't do online because my picture is 10 years old and I figured it was time for a new one. My plan was to go, take care of the thing, and then go to a study session for my upcoming lodge meeting on October 2nd.
Yeah.
I go to the DMV. I wait for two hours. They tell me that can't do it, because they are synched up with the social security office, and when i got married, I changed the surname on my drivers' license, but I didn't update it with the SS office because I didn't know I had to. So now, the DMV has one surname and the SS office has the other, and they have to match, so I was turned away. They said, get a copy of your divorce and go to the SS office to straighten this out. So I go home and get the divorce, and I CALL the SS office first, to make sure I have everything I need. I go to the SS office, half an hour away, where they tell me the copy of my divorce isn't acceptable because it is a photocopy (which they did NOT tell me on the phone), and that I need to go home and get my MARRIAGE certificate. Luckily, I was able to reach Rob on the phone and he could tell me where it was. So I go home and get the marriage certificate, and then and back I go to SS, where they kindly let me cut the line. The nice lady takes care of it, and I will be a hyphenate on the new card I will be getting...
wait for it...
in approximately 2 weeks.
Yeah.
I call the DMV, since my license expires on the 28th. There is nothing they can do. They won't accept the receipt SS gave me as proof, they have to have the actual card. They do't give extensions. So all we can do is pray for speedy mail, or my birthday gift from the universe will be the inability to drive anywhere, including the lodge meeting I already have babysitting for on the 2nd, and am now much less rushed to go study for (I have yet to call and tell my lodge master this, and she is going to fuh-reak).
Well, it is out of my hands now. And once they send the new card, I can go get the new license with the hyphenated name on, and that will be that. And apart from the lodge meeting, I don't really have anything scheduled, and I'm sure I can bum rides from Mom or Julie places if I need to. The weather isn't horrible, I can walk to the supermarket, and hopefully no emergencies will arise. I treated myself to a bagel with tuna and a red velvet cupcake, and will, like I said, just pray for the new card to come quickly. I'm mostly smiling - I think I went through a half a tank of gas today just dealing with this.
GAH.
Yeah.
