awesome birthday of awesomeness
Sep. 30th, 2010 01:22 pmWhen the going gets tough, the tough hit the piano bar.
After way too much traffic getting in, I went for sushi and drinks with
harpiegirl . We always have fun together, and I was extra-happy when she decided to say "screw it" to the worknight and come out to Brandy's with me after (and we walked off much of the sushi while we were at it).
I'd never been to Brandy's, but the piano bar crowd I used to play with seems to have transplanted itself there, and it was like I never left. The special unexpected gift from the 'verse was the appearance of CL, who is as scarey talented as ever but has also apparently cleaned up his act and is sober and glorious and BACK FROM KEY WEST so hopefully I will get to see him more, and it was wonderful to sing with him and watch him do a few guest songs...I don't think anyone wasn't completely wowed by him. Friggin genius.
My oldest friend MM also came, and as much as our lives aren't really compatible and he has a girlfriend with whom he is very happy, I often have to wonder if he is just the love of my life, we're not meant to actually be more than friends this time around, and everyone else is just a substitute for him romantically (I mean, looking at him next to some of my exes, one must admit I have a type, and he was the first). He's as joyous as ever and I love him more than ever.
MI was on the piano, and as I said to E later on, if I could definitely sing "Separate Lives" and "Curtains" with him every night, I wouldn't need to have sex ever again because that would be just fine. We haven't hung out properly in ages, but I can tell that when we do, it will be as if not a day has passed. He had me sing a lot, way more than I had expected to, and I can say this - singing Janis Joplin is a thing your vocal chords must be in the habit of, or they will get angry with you and you will have to make the crowd hit the high notes for you. Other songs went better, and the Janis was pulled off any way.
plainandbonny took some great pictures which are up on Facebook for the interested. I got to be proud to show off my talented friends to some of my other talented friends.
unclebendragon , white knight (despite all the black he wears) drove me home, and I have tambourine bruises for the first time in years. Yay.
The following day got spent watching videos of Facebook love from fabulous FW campers, my faves being JM singing "Let Me Rest In Peace" from OMWF (SQUEEEEE), and ZK, who played Hinckley in this summer's production of Assassins, made me a karaoke duet video - he got the karaoke track for Unworthy of Your Love and filmed himself singing his part, so I could sing the other part - which I did, filmed, and posted for him. It is difficult to sing and squee at the same time.
The other part of that day was spent having my first acupuncture experience, a gift from
directorbeth . It was neat - I had some lovely endorphine things going on during, and some great advice on diet (like how I should eat warm things, and orange is good), and I am not in as much pain as I might be on so crappy a day today, which may or may not be related. The funny bit (to some of you) was, they kept referring to the acupuncture as my "treatment", and I had to resist the urge to say "did I fall asleep?" when it was over.
After acupuncture, we went to the always-fabulous Mesa Grill, where I finally got to experience one of their famous margaritas as well as revisit their poached eggs with spicy chicken sweet potato hash. There was also a blue-corn pancake stuffed with shredded duck, and I kind of wanted to date it.
Sadly, when I got home, the fact that I was on 3 hours' sleep did begin to catch up with me, and Gracie got jealous of the computer and all the birthday videos, and became super-testing-Mommy Girl, so there were crankies on my part. Also, it seems like the time of year for me to pull out Gracie's humidifier, because she coughed a lot of the night and kept me up (the good news is that now she will take cough medicine like a Big Girl and drink it on her own, and I don't have to use the dropper). She came into my bed after the cough medicine and slept pretty well, but I didn't. Getting her off to school this morning was a bit harder than usual because I think we were both tired, but she does look so adorable in her raincoat.
I actually did haul my ass out in the rain to go to krav maga this morning. I'm glad I did because I need the exercise and the lesson, but bummed I did because I'm not any good at it yet, the instructor refers to me as "this young lady" (though he does make a point of busting my chops as if I were any of the guys, and told my partner, "you can step on her knee, she's cool"), it requires VERY different instincts than everything else I have ever done, and I'm not any good at it yet. It's only lesson 2, and the instructor does seem pleased that I want to try everything no matter how advanced or new it is.
Tomorrow I go see The Social Network, complete with a Q&A with Aaron Sorkin! All things considered, life doesn't suck.
