baseball adventures
Oct. 14th, 2010 02:42 pm I actually did bail on krav maga class today, for which I feel like a skunk, but it was probably the best choice. I went to the baseball thing at Gracie's school, and would've had to leave straight from class - plus I am in pain and general yuck from the impending rain.
This was my first Kaplan special event. I chatted with a couple of PTA members who remembered me and are happy I will be working the fall festival next week. It was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. Some of these kids are severely disabled...wheelchairs, strapped to boards, the whole thing. Others are more functional.
Apparently there was a fire of some kind right before the event (like a grease fire, no big deal), so they had to go through the whole fire drill thing, and his kept the kids standing around waiting a long time even before the game started. Gracie saw me all the way across the yard, and her face lit up when she saw me. She had her own wrangler, but I wound up helping (I thought I might). I could tell right away she was over waiting, and was bored. She made a couple of escape attempts (though she was so cute when they announced her, going right to her place and waving), but then was willing to snuggle in my lap until the game (finally) started. They had to introduce everyone, plus all the contributing adults, plus some retired major leaguer whose name I don't remember, plus singing the national anthem, etc. Gracie's team was in the field first, and she did last the whole time and even chased and caught a ball that came her way. However, by the time her team was up to bat, she was done, even though she would've gone first. So her wrangler and I took her back to her classroom (no one was fussed, and all agreed that standing around for an hour and a quarter before doing anything is too long for a little kid), and she finished her seatwork, albeit somewhat grouchily, and then she was allowed to use the computer, which is her favourite thing. I got her settled (she didn't want me to leave), and then went off to meet with the school shrink, and then I came home to some anti-weather meds and some chillout time before the bus shows up. So, overall good first special event day - and Gracie has clearly inherited my not-giving-a-shit about sports. :P
The Snow White play in which Gracie will be Doc is on the same day as their Thanksgiving parade, and I think rehearsals for that start soon. Got to find Gracie's toy stethescope.
