Today was Fall Fest at Gracie's school, and I volunteered to come in and do some improvisational storytelling, since I am a card-carrying member of the PTA now (really. They gave me a card). I put on some vaguely festive clothes and bopped from classroom to classroom, retelling Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella Mad Libs style, with suggestions given by the kids...or in most cases, the TAs. Most of the kids didn't really talk. They all seemed to like me though, and I was all set to leave after hitting most of the younger kids' rooms, and then the president of the PTA ran after me and asked if I could stay to get to one more room, which had heard of me and wanted me to come. I told them I would be more than happy to do this any time they thought it was appropriate (one of the TAs said she would suggest me to her son's elementary school), that I was happy to volunteer my time. I even made some Halloween black cat pins and gave them to some of the kids. I even did Gracie's room, and while she was excited to see me, she wasn't disruptive or anything, and even stayed mellow when I moved on to the next classroom. The whole day was very rewarding. And it is great what the PTA does, they go all out with their special events. This thing had face painting, plus there had been a Halloween-themed baking contest, and pumpkin-carving contest. I'll link to pictures when they post some, I should have brought a camera myself. The next big thing I will participate in will be their Thanksgiving event, when Gracie will be Doc in her class's Snow White show. I was told, just show up in a costume if you want, the kids will love it. One of the classes is doing an Alice themed thing, so that takes care of me. They also said a dragon would be lovely (also next Friday at the Haunted House, [livejournal.com profile] unclebendragon  can just show up if he wants).  Anyone else who has some time, maybe think about coming to the Thanksgiving thing with me - it's an excuse to dress up, and it really is great to bring a smile to the faces of these kids.  And it is wonderful how much the staff and parents care.

This evening has been mellow and nice.  Gracie and I made pumpkin pancakes, which she liked a lot, and for some reason she has been calling me Mickey Mouse all night - I haven't minded because she has been listening a bit better when I do the voice, oddly enough.
