Rain as the best possible symbolism
Jun. 22nd, 2009 04:56 pm Granted, soggy, muddy, but whatever. We knew about it and planned ahead wardrobe-wise, and when I danced around in the rain with the beautiful
ladyjoust , the twinkly
fjordhopper , and the glorious
melebeth whom I have missed terribly, the rain meant nothing but a washing away of all the yuck of the previous year and a cleansing to be ready and open for whatever wonderfulness the days to come happen to send our way.
Gracie wasn't too happy about being dripped on, but she went inside to play with bubbles and was fine, and then when the house needed to be child-free, she came down and sat at our table and nibbled some things and had a drum jam with me...I had run to get my bodhran when I heard the FRIGGIN AWESOME duo playing Star of the County Down, and they let me sit in with them and even the fiddle player did NOT give me dirty looks and to the contrary, both made me feel welcome and thanked me back, when I thanked them for the honour of having played with them. But anyway, then I was sitting next to Gracie with the drum, and I would play a bit, and then she would reach for the tipper. I would give it to her, she would play for a bit, then she would hand the tipper back to me.
Then when we decided it was almost time to go, Rob and Annette went off to get our stuff together (forgetting much of it, but
screamingdolai came to our rescue, and hopefully my bag of DVDs that got left up there will someday make its way back to me), and the band played a happy reel and all the mommies and their kiddies danced around in the mud together. Gracie stayed in my arms the whole time and I think she was tired and soggy and a bit overwhelmed, but seemed to have fun. Overall, she was really very good, which makes for all around joy.
During the ceremony, I sat next to new awesome friend Tracy and we giggled with joy and silliness and awe at how the surges of rain were so exactly like punctuation, and we both agreed that
harpiegrl 's grandma just wanted to make sure everyone knew she was there in spirit. The whole vibe of the ceremony was so very companionable, whether folk knew each other or not, we were bonded together by the weather and of course our love for the beautiful couple. Like the song says, they've had their ups and downs, but to me the rain was there to wash that all away and give them a shiny fresh clean start to all that they can be. It was an honour to witness, and an honour to be part of.
