The commute begins
Jul. 25th, 2010 09:41 pmGracie is back at school (and loving it), and we are going to camp on the weekends. Hopefully my babysitter situation will get a more steady solution, hopefully I'll get to keep the lovely girl Isaac found for me this weekend. Weekends where I am able to bring someone will of course be easier, especially since the girl they found is theatre staff and often has shows to work. But whatever, I'm only teaching the one class and I have some lovely CIT types helping, so we'll be all right. Wish there wasn't such rude traffic on Rt 17, the drive home is a bitch and takes close to 2 hours longer than it should - and Gracie fell asleep toward the end of it and it will be a struggle to get her to sleep tonight, but whatever. She had a good time at camp, is overjoyed to be home (always asks for Bugger when we're away), and will nap on the bus in the morning. Since I didn't have babysitting, the two nights we were at camp were just the two of us hanging out, and it was nice, and probably helped her be able for me to go work a little. This has been a big year of changes for her, and her new school will bring further change, and School Shrink agrees with me that keeping as much routine and stability as possible is a good thing right now.
Amusing Gracie things this weekend - she's still riding her horse, and knows the commands to give. It was so hot yesterday that I went to the pool with her myself, which made her all excited, and she kept taking my hand and leading me through the water and saying "and walk on, Mama" (this is the command she gives the horse). Also, she is now brave enough to feed carrots to the horses herself instead of giving me the carrot and making me do it. She plays with Shadow, and feeds her, pets her, and give her kisses. Shadow is the best horse for her to do this with, of course - we trust Shadow to not nibble tiny fingers. If Shadow was better at lead line, Gracie could ride her. Well, one day.
In the dining room, Gracie likes to sit next to Grandpa Adventure and always tried to steal the microphone he uses to call the tables up. Yesterday he let her help with the announcements. She would (with coaching) say "sit down, everybody!" Adorable. Team Gracie also gave us some circus time in the new junior circus (everything is little!).
In the me news, I have gone back to kickboxing. They have new heavybags which no one has to hold, which is a great plus. I managed to wear my obnoxious rainbow bikini at the pool without feeling ENTIRELY glunky. The fight for stage combat is choreographed and taught in a whirlwind of off-the-cuff-ery, and they will work it over the week with Chris while I find them scenes and do the fight insertion from here, then mail them the scene on facebook.
Here's a thing that happened. There's this sweet 13-year-old kid I have befriended. He is Dominican, lovely, one of 8 kids, and loves to play with Gracie. When down at the pool yesterday, he came over to me looking upset and proceeded to tell me that this Korean-American kid over there had been picking on him and calling him Kumar (my friend isn't Indian, but looks it a little). I went right over to the obnoxious kid and his friends, and said the following -
"Hey there, how you doing. See that guy over there? That's my friend Matt. Dude. Kumar? Really? Do you REALLY want to go there with the racial stereotypes?"
The kid fell all over himself apologising, and when I suggested he do so to Matt, he did, and Matt felt better. I told Matt that if the kid gave him any more shit, he tell me immediately. Ain't no one pulling that crap on my watch (I also gave Matt a snappy comeback should he need one, but I hope he doesn't). I passed the obnoxious kid on the street today, greeted him by name, and gave him a big smile which mostly said "I'm watching you, dipshit". Apparently the kid recounted the incident in his bunk quite obnoxiously - and thought I was Beth. That bit makes it extra funny.
